LNCS Volume Publication of SELMAS Papers
The SELMAS 2004 workshop builds on the success of the two previous SELMAS workshops. The SELMAS 2002 workshop was held at the ICSE 2002 conference in Orlando, USA, in May 2002; the SELMAS 2003 workshop was held at the ICSE 2003 conference in Portland, USA, in May 2003. Referred extended papers from all previous workshops were formally published by Springer-Verlag in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science series, and there are similar plans for SELMAS 2004.
Provisory Title
Software Engineering for Multi-Agent Systems III
Volume Features
Our goal in editing this book is to provide evidence for the value of multi-agent software engineering to realistic projects based on our experience. This LNCS volume should not be considered introductory to multi-agent systems; it will cover the state of the art in software engineering for large-scale multi-agent systems and present problems and issues about development of complex multi-agent systems as discussed during the workshop. The existing books on multi-agent systems usually start with titles like "Basic...", "Introduction to...", or "Everything you need to know..." . In addition, these books describe simplistic examples that work as just training examples and cannot demonstrate the alleged power of agent-based software engineering. The primary intended audience for this book is researchers and practitioners who are interested in the progress of the software engineering for multi-agent systems (especially large, complex systems), individuals interested in understanding the relationship between agents and objects in realistic applications, and those interested in experimental results.
The book chapters will contain examples that are representative of real world agent-based engineering. The book will describe the problems with agent-based software engineering, proposing suitable methods and tools for engineering large-scale multi-agent systems. This LNCS volume will explain potential solutions and problems related to stringent quality requirements, like security, scalability, reliability, maintainability, reusability and so on. The workshop will serve as a reference guide to the book editors. The book will be composed of different parts, which will approach separately the issues discussed during the workshop. Each part will contain 3 or 4 papers. The choice of the papers will be driven by the desire to cover the field of multi-agent software engineering with the maximum breadth, while maintaining the utmost quality. As a result, the papers will highlight many different but complementary aspects and viewpoints of this recently established and very active scientific field.
